Biography
Fusing a European synthpop sensibility with a world of magical realism, London's Rodney Cromwell, incorporates elements of electronica, post-punk, indiepop, psychedelia, post-disco and hauntology to create futuristic, emotive, uplifting and melodic soundscapes. Blending an indie pop vocal delivery with classic electronica sounds, he utilises an arsenal of old synths, melodicas and stylophones, combining these with guitars, soaring bass lines and catchy melodies to create an art-pop sound that is unique, sitting in an uncharted netherworld between Kraftwerk, Stereolab, New Order, Broadcast, Kafka, Proust and Alice in Wonderland.
With two albums to his name 'Age of Anxiety' (2015), 'Memory Box' (2022), the EP 'Rodney's English Disco' (2018) he has accumulated some serious acclaim featured by publications including Electronic Sound, Huffington Post, NME, Paste, Shindig!, Record Collector, Louder Than War, The Big Takeover, Magic RPM and the Bandcamp homepage. He’s had national radio play across the globe and multiple spins from Ireland's RTE, from BBC Radio 6 Music in the UK and RNE3 in Spain for whom he recorded a live session.
On-stage is where the project is at its most compelling, his band interweave vocals, vintage synths, guitar, bass, melodica and stylophones, sequenced to original video projections, interjected with Cromwell’s ‘offbeat wit’ (NME). Reviewers have compared the live show to 'a spiritual experience' (Pop-O-Matic) with devoted fans, telling him they would come back every week to see the show. He has shared stages with acts including A Flock of Seagulls, Pram, Death & Vanilla, Rowetta, M!R!M, Steve Davis and Damo Suzuki and played festivals including Indietracks and Madrid Popfest. In 2022 he recorded a live session for Electronic Sound magazine and toured with Blancmange. In summer 2023 he completed his debut UK headline tour.
Cromwell is continuing to play shows while preparing his next single, the live favourite 'Exercise Class' and slowly starting to compose a new album.
